SENSATIONAL ARREST

Three shots were fired by detectives this morning before they arrested two coung men st a house at Hanoi at the foot of the IVaitakere ranges. The arrest followed a two days chase or Detectives Packman an.' Hayes and Constable Rushton, of Henderson, who were seeking a brand new bright red car which was stolen from tho city. Several times they sighted it, but each time its superior speed enabled it to escape. Last night they went to a house at Ranui and hid ’-i a hedge until 1.30 this morning, when two men were seen creeping towards the hedge. Ordered to stop they bolted, and, isfter a challenge, three revolver shots were fired by the detectives. One man dropped and the other stood still. Both then submitted to arrest and were handcuffed together. The detectives then searched the house and founc a large quantity of gelignite, detonators, and an electric battery with a hand-plugger for detonating charges; also a very large and miscellaneous collection of gro confectionery, and other goods, which made two car-loads and two van loads when being transported to the police station later. At the Police Court, later, two brothers, William Cole, aged 24. mechanic, and Barnard Charles Cole, aged 26, were charged with stealing tho ear valued at £535. They were remanded for a week, bail being refused, the police stating that other charges were pending. It is understood that one of tne accused left the city later with a detective to recover the stolen car. which is said to be concealed under fern laaves. ___
