One hundred years K? ago swamp, flax and sandhills formed a desolate waste. The hand of man transSy formed that into the thriving export outlet of one of the richest provinces in New K< Zealand. That accomplishment was coloured with incident. No centre of populak) tion, away back in those early sailing ship and bullock-dray days, came through -J unscathed. Patea faced its full share of troubles, had its troops, its garrison houses, its good timesand its bad. When the butterfat lands of Taranaki came into their own its value as a port was enhanced a hundredfold.
