RIVER DUES QUESTION EXEMPTION UNDER THE CROWN The question whether the Aotea Native Land Board was liable for river dues in connection with tho Banana Development Scheme, was debated at yesterday’s meeting of the River Trust, the matter being left to Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., for Patea, to look into. Mr W. Brown, secretary to the River Trust, said that tho matter had been discussed for some time, but the Aotea Board held that it was exempt from dues under the Act on tho fame basis

that exempted the Crown. Mr Dickie: The Act should bo amended. Mr H. J. Duigan said that he knew of several trusts which tho Aotea Board had set up for the individual. Tho money the River Trust received was going to the good of the river. Mr R. Hatrick’s opinion was that by enforcing payment of tho dues tho River Trust would penalise tho devolpmerit scheme so far as the river service was concerned, and they would then press for the road on which there were no dues to pay.
