NEW CABINET

CAREFUL DELIBERATIONS

ECONOMY BEFORE WAGE CUTS.

[ Per Prw. AMoeuOion. j WELLINGTON, Sept. 25.

Cabinet is sitting long hours in an endeavour to finalise its policy. It is common knowledge that party differences have been entirely subdued in the combined effort being, made to restore confidence and stability in Dominion affairs.

Questions affecting taxation and economies have occupied a good deal of attention, and it has been learned that instructions have been given to departmental heads to submit detailed information covering every avenue of possible reduction in the national expenditure.

It is stated that Ministers are averse to making any further cuts in the wages and salaries in the Public Service or effecting any alterations in pension benefits, except as a last resort. An early announcement of an alteration in the Unemployment Board’s policy may be expected. The first meeting of the nek Executive Council took place at noon today.

EDUCATION PORTFOLIO

A GRIEVANCE REVIVED

DUNEDIN, Sept. 25. The Otago Daily Times (Reform) ■ays in an editorial: — • ‘The principle that the Munster of Education should be a member of the elective Chamber has generally been recognised in the past. . . It would be surprising if spirited exception were no' taken when the current session is resumed to the allocation of a portfolio that revives a grievance against which the Lower House protested in most pointed manner twenty-nine years ago. The Leader of the Socialist Party has, in fact, already expressed his intention of strongly advancing the view that the Minister of Education should be a member of the popular Cabinet. Mr Holland is freqently at fault in his judgment, but in this instance it is supported by a precedent that has gen?-ally been respected, and also by considers ticn of what is natural, logical, and reasonable.’’ MR MASTERS CONGRATULATED WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. A motion congratulating the Hon. R. Masters on his appointment as Minuted of Education was passed at the monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Wellington College yesterday. Proposing the motion, the chairman, Mr G. Mitchell, said that from his parsonal knowledge of Mr Masters he knew that he would make a very good Minister. Mrs E. W. Kane seconded the motion, and paid a tribute to Mr Masters’ industry. Mr W. H. Denton supported the motion after receiving an assurance that it was not intended to cast any reflection on the late Minister, Mr H. Atmore. THE HON. A. HAMILTON. DUNEDIN, Sept. 25. The students of Knox College have vent a message of congratulation to the Hon. A. Hamilton (Minister of Labour) in recognition of his attainment of Cabinet rank.
