Two hundred East Kent farmers poured a bucket of mud over the head of an auctioneer during a Canterbury sale to recover arrears of tithe rent, against which farmers everywhere hate rebelled. They stoned the auctioneer’s police guard.
The sale was abandoned, the auctioneer escaping in a police car.
The Daily Mail states that the total annual tithe payments in England and Wales exceeds £3,000,000, of which the parish clergy receive three-quarters, the remainder going to education and charity.
