By an overwhelming majority the American Legion voted to ask Congress to submit the repeal or modification of the prohibition* laws to the States with i request that each State submit the Isue to its voters. MODIFICATION OF ACT. AN EFFORT ON AGRICULTURE. Received Sept. 25, 5.5 p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 24. The Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Hyde, has announced that he will undertake an investigtion of the economic results on agriculture of the proposal to permit the manufacture of small beer. He says he has received numerous inquiries on the possible effect of a resumption of the pre-prohibition production of hops and barley and he will attempt to determine how many farmers would thus be employed if the Prohibition Act was modified. “I am indertaking it purely as a personal matter,” he stated.
