WANGANUI CENTRAL CLUB SUCCESSFUL SEASON. ANNUAL REPORT FOR MEMBERS. The annual meeting of members of the Wanganui Central Swimming Club will be held next Monday night, when tho following annual report for the 1930-31 season will bo presented by the committee:— Tho committee has great pleasure in presenting the report of the activity of the 1930-31 season, which has been one of satisfactory progress The committee and members of the club take the opportunity of thanking tho Wanganui City Council for allowing the use of the municipal baths, St. George’s Gate, one night in each week free of charge, thus enabling club members to have a night for competition among themselves.

Club Nights.—Owing to bad weather prevailing throughout the season, the attendance on these nights was very poor. The keenness shown by club members was responsible for the very interesting contests which eventuated, and they are to be complimented upon the support given. Club Championships.—The club <rwas fortunate in having fine weather for the championship events, and a good attendance was recorded for the evening’s entertainment. The swimming was of a high standard and the finishes were worthy of the excellent contests arranged. The following are the championship winners for the season:—

Junior girl, Z. Watts. Intermediate girl, M. Gardiner. Diving: Junior girl, Z. Watts; lady E. Watson.

Junior boy, G. Holmes. Intermediate boy, C. Bullivant. Senior, B. Haworth. Diving: Junior boy, A. Deere and C. Nolan; senior, G. Brewer. This opportunity is taken to congratulate the swimmers who were successful in gaining club championship honours, also the other members who participated in these contests.

Giffdrd Alarshall Diving Cup, for competition among the intermediate boyj was competed for at tho carnival held during the season, and was won lor the fourth time in succession by G. Brewer. Congratulations are extended to the winner uu his line performance. The Thomas Relay Shield for interclub racing was retained by tho Gonvillo Club. The racing lor tho Shield this season created grot interest among tho public, and the contests resulted ru the closest of finishes seeii lor quite a time. The club extends their heartiest congratulations to the Gonville team on their win.

The Tingey Cup for inter-club, flying squadron racing was retained by thu Central Club, alter a number of exciting races against the Gonville team, lhe Club congratulates the members of the team ou their line performance. The committee decided mat me Bonner Cup presented by Airs. (Capt.) Bon ner for the ladies, and tho Crotty Cup by Air. Crotty for intermediate boys, be xor inter-ciub competition. Both these trophies were won by the icpreseutative Central teams, and the club congratulates them on being the first winners.

, Williams Cup for Bridge-to-Bridg.i Race.—The annual bridge-to- or* dge race for the Williams Cup was hell on Saturday afternoon, January 7, at 3 <> clock, starting from the Aramoiiu Rowing Club pontoon and finishi.ig at me Town Bridge. Twenty compel t ors participated in this race. Tho first place was filled by C. Bullivant (un.tral) with B. Howarth second. The fastest time was recorded by R. Webster (Auckland), while J. Campbell (who has won this event thrice), finished in seventh place, being beaten by 11. Gowan (Gonville), after an exciting race. Aliss D. Anderson (Gonville) is to be congratulated on finishing fourth, also for being the tirs lady swimmer to complete the distance. C. Bullivant was presented with the Williams Cup and miniature for gaining first place, while R. Webster (Auckland), for making fastest time, received an order for a guinea. Tho club congratulates CBullivant on winning the trophy, also for gaining second fastest time. Empson Cup.—This trophy is for competition between tho Wanganui Collegiate School and the Central Club. After an exciting race the Central team iW'S successful in winning this coveted trophy. Both teams are to bo congratulated upon the fine performance given. District Championships.—Several of tho Central swimmers competed at the district championships showing credit able form. The following are some of the championship results:— 60yds. junior girl.—Z. Watts, 1; B. Carter, 3. 100yds. junior boy.—D. Holmes, 2; E.

Carter, 3. 100yds. intermediate boy.— J. Carde, 1; C- Bullivant, 2; J. Walker, 3. 220yds. intermediate boy.—C. Bullivant, 1. 220yds. men’s.—B. Haworth, 2. 100yds. men’s.—B. Haworth, 1. 50yds. men’s.—B. Haworth, 2. Men’s diving.—G. Brewer, 1. 100yds. intermediate backstroke.—G. Brower, 2. 100yds. girls’ junior.—B. Carter, 2.

Carnival.—The club conducted one carnival and it proved a great success, being well patronised by the public* The entries received were equal to any received in other years. Membership.—There is a slight decrease in the membership compared with the previous season, but the committee hopes that this year members will endeavour to increase the membership of the club by making every effort to bring along at least one new member each.

The Moore Cup, for competition between tho Boy Scout Troops, was won by the Knox team after a very exciting race.

New Zealand Championship at Ashburton.—The junior and intermediate New Zealand Championship contest was held at Ashburton in January. Central Club sent C. Bullivant down as representative for Wanganui. The committee are pleased to report that he gained first place in his heat for the 440yds. intermediate boys’ championship and in the final was placed second. It was a good performance and the club take this opportunity of congratulating him.

Donations.—Thanks are due to the following for their generous contributions: Mesdames (Capt.) Bonner and Brewer, Messrs T. H. Lovegrove, T. E. Thomas, B. Hoar and J. H. Hill. Finance.—Although the balance-sheet does not show as great a credit balance as the previous year, nevertheless it is very satisfactory.

Social Evening.—An evening was held at the Victoria League Rooms for the purpose of presenting trophies won, and for finishing up the season. It was a very enjoyable evening and great credit is duo to the ladies responsible. Mr. Dickson (president) made the presentations and congratulated the various winners on their fine performances. Before asking Mrs. (Capt.) Bonner to present her cup to the captain (Miss V. Wilson) of the Central Ladies’ team, Mr. Dickson made reference to the good work douo by Mrs. Bonner) and thanked her on behalf of tho club for her generous donation. Mrs. Bon* ner also donated six silver buttons to the members of the team. Tho club showed their appreciation to four men** bers who swam for the team at various times by presenting each with a small trophy.

General Remarks.—Thanks are due to those officials who assisted at tho weekly club night meetings and carnival, also to the custodian, Mr. G. Watts, for ever-ready and valuable assistance rendered to the club during the season. To tho social committee thanks are due for their fine efforts in helping to raise funds for the club. Congratulationr are extended to L. Smith in winning the New Zealand 220yds. breastroke championship, also to B. Haworth for Ms fine effort in being placed second. Miss Anderson is to be congratulated on finishing second in the New Zealand 220yds. ladies’ breaststroke championship.

The press are thanked for the splendid interest they have shown in reporting on the work during the season. In conclusion the committee takes this opportunity of thanking all members for tho keen interest shown, and trust that they will continue to do so, thus making the new season even more successful than last..
