CROCHET NEEDLE
ANOTHER REVIVAL It is not surprising that with all the other revivals of the Victorian era, the crochet needle should once more come into its own. The click of the knitting needle has long been heard in the land, says an English exchange. A wellknown couturiere, of the Rue de la Paix, is largely responsible for this revival, for it was she who first introduced the bright little woollen crocheted scarf with her spring costumes. This was the beginning, and then came the little crocheted beret to match the scarf, the sweater of soft crocheted zephyr and finally bits of crochet in silk or wool were introduced in all sorts of day-time costumes. These crocheted garments are lighter and therefore much more comfortable for warmer weather than those which are closely knitted. The use of crochet as trimming has found favour in a number of the great dressmaking houses. One of these is showing a beach pyjama suit of fine, red woollen material, the low-cut bodice of which is filled in at the back and front with plastrons of worsted crochet in the same colour. Black wool crochet is used by another dress designer for the pockets and collar and turned-back cuffs of the jacket of a bright blue sports costume, and a frock of beige jersey has long, tight sleeves of crochet in the same colour, with a strip of the same crochet outlining the surplice front. Fine white cotton crochet is used on the edges of collars and cuffs of white pique, and I have recently seen several frocks designed for young girls of white dotted Swiss muslin or organdie materials, by the way, which are also revivals of the Victorian era, which had the tiniest little edge of linen crocheted on the tucks of the skirt and around the neck and short sleeves.
