PATEA

HYDROELECTRICITY RETICULATION SCHEME Particulars of the scheme to reticulate the added outer area south of Hawera were placed before the South Taranaki Electric Power Board last Friday by the engineer (Mr T. B. Overton). A very brief discussion sufficed members of the board and on the motion of Mr E. A. Pacey, seconded by Mr F. Parsons, the scheme was approved and the boundaries as set out were adopted. The whole question of reticulation in this area nill be dealt with more fully later, when the respective rolls and' valuations hat e been obtained. Mr Overton submitted a comprehensive report, and in the course of his remarks said that the area included in rhe board’s district, and now under consideration contained a large amount of back-block country, which had little or no prospect of ever being served with electricity. He was, therefore, of opinion that such areas should be es eluded from the present scheme. It was difficult, to define a boundary; but byi following section lines, roads and screams it was possible to indicate a suitable line for practical purposes. T Main Features of Reticulation ••Commencing at the main sub-star ion on the Tawhiti Road,” the report con tinned. “I would recommend that two feeders be taken along the Ohangar Road one proceeding into the Meremerej district and the other feeding into Mokoia. One of the two lines from the I sob-station to the Hawera Borough will I he taken from Yolantown to the South . Road and along the South Road to: aiter-eonneet with the Ohangai-Mokoia, ine. From Mokoia onwards a heavy: ine will be taken to Patea, lateral! ines being tapped in as required. The shole network will be laid out with, the object at some future date of secur- ; ing a double line between the borough of Patea and the main substation at Tawhiti FW»nd “The estimated costs and the revenue j of lines for immediate construction|

Patea Borough Council “The agreement being negotiated between the board and the Patea| Borough Council provides that the board may give supply at Kakaramea. so that in the event, of the comprehen j fiivo scheme s.-» outlined ar-‘»ve being turne-* down s. me skeleton scheme way be lusted by the board carry out its Villi the >o •’pl council. “Should such a necessity arise I would recommend that the second line to the Hawera borough be taken from Nolantown to the South Koad and from; thence taking the southern route asi proposed in the main scheme to Kaka-■ ramea. The total cost of new line,. accessories, and measuring instrument it Kakaramea would be £4OOO. This, scheme would merely give supply to the i Patea Borough Council in terms of the; hgreement and no allowance is made, tor supplies of any description on the; route.’ 7 Matter for Ratepayers The chairman (Mr J. B. Murdoch)! said that he and Mr Parsons had gone| through the scheme carefully with Mr| Overton and if it met with the board’s approval all that remained was to test the attitude of the ratepayers. The rate of security for the purpose of a .oan would be much smaller in the added outer area than the original area. The money would be required for reticulation only and the ratepayers would not be burdened with a generating plant. Mr Pacey: We cannot do better than adopt the engineer’s suggestions. Mr A. J. Gibbs (newly-elected member of the board): I believe there will be strong opposition to a loan proposal

in" Mr J. Cork, of Kauwhatau. down in my end as things are at present. Besides the ratepayers are dying pretty hard over this question. Mr Pacey then moved that the report be received and the boundaries as set out adopted. The motion was seconded by Alt Parsons and carried. FOOTBALL. Although the match that was nrranged for last. Saturday between the Opunake and Patea seniors on the former’s ground, has been reported as won by default by Opunake. this is not quite correct. It is hoped that the match will be played in due course. It seems that the Opunake players wished to see their third grade team play in the final with the North Taranaki winners. and requested the P’itca team not to come to Opunake. The question of the game as defaulted is being put to the Taranaki Union.
