ASCENT OF RUAPEHU
ALPHINE SPORTS CLIMBERS DIFFICULTIES OVERCOME. TWO WOMEN IN PARTY, CHATEAU TONGARIRO, Aug. 23. J deal weather continues to be enjoyed by the Alpine Sports Club winter sports party at the Chateau Ton* gariro, most of whom spent yesterday in ski-ing. Good progress is now being made by the less experienced memA party of eleven to day made an excursion to the Crater Lake on foot, stops having been prepared by a climbing party yesterday. The ascent was accomplished in about five hours. After reaching Crater Lake, from, which steam was issuing, the party roped themselves together for the ascent of the main Ruapehu peak. This climb invo'ved considerable step-cutting owing to the presence of sastrugi—windblown ice in the form of large “mushrooms. ’ f After a short spell at the summit, the return journey was made under more favourable conditions. Exception•illv good visibility made the trin particularly interesting. The party included two women members. The remainder of tho holiday rill be occupied in further ski-ing.
