INTER - COLLEGE RUGBY
HONOURS GO TO WELLINGTON NEXT BEST PERFORMANCE FROM NELSON (Bj> “CROSS-BAR") Wellington deservedly won the 1931 inter-eollege Rugby tournament yesterday, defeating the Wanganui Collegiate School in the final by 28 points to 14. Though the margin of superiority judged on the scores was wide, actual play gave Wanganui more prominence. Though defeat came the whites’ way they held Wellington successfully in the first spell, led on points into the second, and then faded out of the picture in face of a team that gradually improved with the progress of the match. Nelson, by accounting for Christ’s College in the early match by seven points to three, justly earned a place as run-ners-up. Wellington scored two wins, Nelson a win and a loss, and Christ’s College and Wanganui Collegiate School a draw and a loss each. Fine weather favoured the tournament again and a splendidly green field made a pleasing picture in the centre of a gaily dressed and an enthusiastic public. The standard of Rugby, while still below that of three or four seasons back, was better than that set on Saturday, the final match being interesting until the last twenty minutes or so. Frequent lapses in handling by the backs of all four teams, however, and the consequent many scrums for faulty passing, had a tendency to disappoint those who had come to see fast, sure backs co-operating in the best Rugby fashion.
