MOTOR UNION

DECREES EXPLAINED. HAWERA CONFERENCE. [ Per Press Association. ) HAWERA, Aug. 22. Officers elected at the North Island Motor Union Conference were: The president, Mr W. O’Callaghan (Hawora); vice-presidents, Dr A. Porritt (Wangan(i), Mr J. H. Edmundson (Hawke’s Bay). The next conference will be held at Palmerston North. The half-yearly meeting will be at the Chateau Tongariro. The conference decided to oppose the increase in the speed of heavy commercial vehicles, as proposed under the heavy traffic regulations, on the ground that faster speed by such vehicles would cause greatly increased costs in road and bridge maintenance, and a substantial increase in danger to the travelling public. The position of motorists who commit by-law or motor regu'ations offences or become involved in accidents in being compelled to give evidence at the town at which the offence or mishap occurred,- instead of being able to gWe evidence in the town in which they reside was again ventilated. It was decided that the North and South Island Unions should combine in making strong representation to the Minister of Justice to have the position altered.
