SOCIAL Mrs S. Mcßae entertained a number ‘ of her friends last Tuesday at a bridge afternoon. Three tables were arrang- . cd in the drawing-room, which re- ( sembled a bower of flowers with bowls of orange calendulas and primroses ( and violets. Prizes were won by Mrs ' Hodge (highest score) and Miss R. Honeyfield (lucky score). Among , those present were Mesdames Honeyfield, Hamerton, Dixon, Hodge, Jones, ; C. R. Honeyfield, Roberts, Stevens, W. • Patterson, Simons and Misses Kenworthy and Honeyfield. FOOTBALL The junior match, Patea v. Kaponga, for the Gibson Banner, that was to have been played last Wednesday, will bo played to-morrow at Hawera. Mr J. Coakley will referee. The team will be as follows, for Patea: Waller, Maue, Adams, Cousins, T. Taylor, Paterson, Prouse. Gibbs, Kettles, J. Minten, Bourn, Clarke, J. Taylor, Moreland, F. Willis. Emergencies: Boyle, T. Broughton, T. Hurley. The seniors will travel to Opunakc to-morrow. This should prove an exciting game, between the second and third South Taranaki teams, as they stand at present. One more game wil complete the championships, and this will be played the following Saturday, August 29. W.D.F.U. A long expressed wish was brought t j fulfilment last Wednesday, when a branch of the Women’s D’vision of the Farmers’ Union was formed at Alton. This first meeting, held in the Alton Hall, was most enthuisastic, there being an attendance of over thirty ladies. Mrs Cocker, of Eltham, presided. Mrs Cocker, the official organiser for South Taranaki, explained hew the division was helping the country folk in various ways. The fact that 28 members joined in the room shewed how enthusiastic the gathering was and that augured well for the future of the movement. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs W. E. Tayfijr; vice presidents, Mesdames H. Hodge, A. J.
Gibbs and A. J. Hall; secretary. Mrs R. Nicholson; treasurer ,Miss A. Burnand. It was decided to hold meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. Mrs T. Allan, Hawera, spoke vu behalf of the Hawera branch and wi.sbe-l tho new branch success. Mrs E. Meub also spoke of the many activities of the i iiion. Other visitors were Mrs May (Rawhitiroa) and Miss John stone, of the Hawera branch. -An apology was received from Mrs W E. Carter, president of the Hawera branch. Mrs W. E. Taylor, the new president, thanked the meeting for the honour done her in electing her president. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the -Alton ladies.
