BOY SCOUTS . On Monday night the Raetihi Boy ! Scouts’ troop received a visit from Commissioner IL Christie, of Wanga- ; nui, who ’8 in charge of the district. , There were over 30 Scouts on parade I under Scoutmasters White and F. E. I Gibbons. Tho chairman of the com- , mittee of management, Mr W. Jack, I and Messrs N. Brown and W. Moorman, members of the committee, were also in attendance. Apologies were received I from Mesrs B. A. Drury, L. Ritchie, | and C. A. C. McDonald. The commissioner inspected the Scouts at work under the patrol leaders. He expressed himself as being well satisfied with the progress much by the boys. He gave an interesting talk to the lads, and some good advice and questioned them on the rules of scouting. GENERAL NEWS. There was a good attendance of members of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild at the residence of Mrs F. J. Thomson, on Wednesday, when opportunity was taken to say good-bye and Mrs N. Brown, president, made a presentation of a handsome crystal vase. Several ladies wished Mrs Thomson and family every success and happiness in the future and Mrs Thomson feelingly replied.

A surprise party last week entertained Miss C. Henderson on the occasion of her approaching marriage and Mr A. Urwin presented her with a hand, some fruit dish. Mr Dickens suitably replied. Mesdames N. Brown and C. A. L. McDonald arranged a dainty afternoon for Miss Henderson, at the residence of Mrs McDonald when a large number of useful articles were given to her. There were 19 cases of mishaps at the hockey tournament last Sunday. Messrs Smith and Burney, of the Taumarunui branch of St. John Ambulance, attended the cases. Medical attention was required for one player. At a meeting of the Kaetihi centre of the Trinity College of Music arrangements were made for the annual examination of pupils to be held next month. Dr. V. Thomas will be the examiner and he has consented to give a musical recital which, will probably' be held in McNair’s Hall. A start will be made with the cheerup week functions on Tuesday night, when it is expected the Theatre Royal will be crowded. A programme of pictures will be interspersed with community singing. On Wednesday skating will be provided for the young people in the afternoon and for adults at night. A card party will be held on Thursday and on Friday pictures and community singing. On Sunday there will be a sacred concert. The Chamber of Commerce has organised these functions and the business people are bearing the cost.

A narrow escape from a serious accident occurred on the Ohakune-Raetihi Road on Wednesday night. A party of young men were driving up to Raetihi and when going down a slight incline on the Raetihi side of the S bend a horse suddenly appeared in the track of the car lights. The driver managed to turn quickly to miss the horse, which fortunately went away from the car but it is thought it was struck by the mudguard.

Mr and Mrs 8. Gould, formerly in business in Raetihi, but now of Huapai, near Auckland, was on a visit here this -week. It is probable they will again settle in this district. ODDFELLOWS. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Raetihi Lodge, M.U.L0.0.F. held on Wednesday night, was presided over by the Past Grands. Bro. Lucas P.G., acted as N.G., Bro. T. Langdon P.G., as L.M., Bro. R. Robertson P.G., as V.G., Bro. L. H. Fagg P.G., as G., Bro. Parkes P.G., as P.S., Sis Cohen PG., as E.S., Sis. M. R. Buckley, P.G. as 0.G., Bros. T. S. Fagg P.G., A. Rose P.G., L. Bernand P.G., A. G. Laloli P.G., Bro. H. Bowater P.G., hilling the other positions. An official visit was paid by the Ohakune Lodge under P.G. Bro. Perry. A candidate was duly initiated under the conductorship of P.G. T. S. Flagg. A large amount of correspondence dealing with lodge business was dealt with. P.G. Bro. Bernard gave an account of visits paid to some of the lodges in Wellington. Several accounts were passed for payment, the sick pay being considered very moderate for this season. A heartv vote of thanks was accorded P.G. Bro. Robertson for his donation of cloth and work in renovating the furniture of the lodge. The P.G.’s were complimented on the way they had conducted the meeting and a vote of thanks was duly passed for their work. After the business had been concluded, a hot supper was provided by the P.G.’s to which full justice was done by the large attendance. A number of toasts were duly honoured and community singing indulged in, the speakers including P.G. Bro. Payne, P.G. Bro. L. H. Fagg, P.G. Sis. White, P.G. Sis. Coker, P.G. Bro. T. S. Fagg. P.G. Bro. Lucas, P.G. Bro. C. Lane,’ P.G. Bro. Perry, N.G. Bro. Burgess, Bro. Green, Bro. jjack and others. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close shortly before midnight by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
