NOVEL ADVERTISING SCHEME CANADIAN MARKET SOUGHT. SYDNEY, July 18. At the end of tho week th© Cana-dian-Australian Royal Mail liner Niagara will reach Vancouver from • Sydney with the first shipment of new ’ season’s citrus fruit from New Souta Wales. Each of the 6000 cases will participate in a novel advertising camL paigu. The campaign is intended to do more than advertise Australian oranges, ‘ mandarins and lemons, it is designed ’ to foster trade between the two Dominions. In a circular accompany* iug each case the New South. Wales Wholesale Fruit Distributors’ Associa- } tion Limited, which is making tlio shipments, points out that whuo tho t fruit is entirely an Australian product, it is wrapped in paper manufactured ; in Canadian mills and packed in cases t made from Canadian timber. Tho paper on which the circular is printed is also u product of Canada. “Au—- ! tnuia is with you in Empire trading.” ( says the circular. Exploitation of the Canadian market for oranges was commenced in earnest . by the association last year, when the Californian crop was largely a, failure. This year the Australian produce is likely to meet intense competition from . the United .States growers, who have for years had a virtual monopoly of the Dominion market. Last year, however, Australian oranges made a good impression and realised good prices. This season special care is being taken to. ship only high grade fruit, which -s uniformly graded, cleaned, dried, brushed, wrapped and packed under the most hygienic conditions. Tho fruit is branded ‘*Gcms o’ Gold.” Each purchaser of a case of “Gems ■ o’ Gold” fruit will receive at the same time a ticket in a novel lottery, the prize for which is a trip to Australia, [aside the case a card will be tacked, bearing a number, which the purchaser is asked to keep. At the end of the season facsimile cards will be drawn by ballot in Sydney, and the result cabled to Vancouver for publication, and to be broadcast throughout the districts where the fruit has been sold. 'J'ho prize includes first class ship and hotel accommodation and a tour of the Murruinbidgoe irrigation area, where the fruit is grown, and the journey will occupy about ten weeks.
