LIVING IN SQUALOR
MAORIS AT FRANKLIN FURTHER CASES QUOTED SCOURGE OF TUBERCULOSIS. [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Aug. 19. “The Health Department Inspector is of opinion that 75 per cent, of the Maoris in Franklin district have tuberculosis, owing to the conditions under which they are living,” said Mr Parvin, member for Franklin on the Auckland Hospital Board. He added that living conditions in Franklin for Maoris were equally as bad as those at Mangere (reported yesterday). In one shed, Bft. by 10ft., built of kerosene tins, eight persons were living and pay 2s 6d rent. A few days ago a baby was born there. Mr Wallace, chairman of the Board, said six Maori T.B. cases from Franklin had been sent to hospital, and he believed there were many more not receiving proper attention. Special provision should bo made by the Native Department for indigent Maori hospital cases. Dr. Hughes, Medical Officer of Health, said the conditions in Franklin district were a good deal worse than at Mangere.
