REDUCTION OF RATES
APPRECIATION EXPRESSED SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL Appreciation of the recent reduct inn of 20 per cent, made by the Southland County Council in the rates for the current year was expressed in a letter from the secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand which was received at the last meeting of the council. The letter was as follows:—“Some months ago a circular was sent to all chambers of commerce affiliated to this association, pointing out. the urgency of local body economy, and requesting ‘hat they get in touch with all their respective bodies and urge upon them the necessity of drastic economy and consequent reduction in rates. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce has advised us that a reduction of approximately 20 per cent. h.;s been effected in your general rates and hospital rates. 1 am instructed to congratulate you on this step and to tell you how much the business community appreciates the success of your efforts toward economy in local body expendi-
