Outstanding Croupier, who started twice for two wins, was the outstanding three-year-old at the Grand National meeting. He is by Surveyor, a good horse by Nassau from Pedometer, by Stepniak from Demeter, by Wallace from Elensis, an important Barcaldine mare, the ancestress, also, of Winning Hit and other successful performers bred at the Stonyhurst Stud. Pellctt, the dam of Croupier, is by Thurnham from Poll, by Hymettus from Pcllicule., by Birkenhead. Pelham, a brother to Pellet, was a good, hurdler, one of the first horse to bring Thurham into prominence as a sire of jumpers. There have not been any other notable performers from the family, but there is no doubt as to Croupier’s ability as a galloper. He does not figure as a classic candidate, but ho will have plenty of opportunities in handicaps to demonstrate his quality. It remains to be seen whether he will stay, but he is so brilliant that he looks certaii to gather in a lot of money without being tried out, ih tno meantime, furthen than a mile. His race record is restricted to six starts. He was third in his initial effort, butaho won on the other five occasions. The three successes prior to the Riecarton trip did not bring in much money, £45 10s at Nelson, followed by £45 and £35 at Nelson, so that, with £l4O for each of last week’s wins, ho has now won £405 10s. He is eligible yet, therefore, fore, for hack events, but ho requires only £94 10s to put him into open company, where his real chance to earn monev will come.
