An interesting experiment was inaugurated at Newport Docks, South Wales, today, when a Clan Line Steamer was connected by telephone Wit 1 I. ■ Cables had been laid to the general cargo side of the docks, where 9 plugging in switches had been installed. The Clan Line has used Newport Dorks for 40 years and it is estimated that it has carried 2.000.000 tons of cargo to Egypt and other parts of Africa, including locomotives and railwav carriages. Similar facilities for connection with ships berthed in dock to the trunk telephone service will be available at Swansea and <r : ff.
