The Earl and Countess of Strathmore’s golden wedding celebrations are ovrrsha*lowed by the fear that increasing taxation may result in the closing | of the ancient Glamis Castle. Lord Strathmore says that the times are becoming so bad that he may be unable to remain in residence, “laxation absorbs £BO of every £lOO I receive/' he said. “Un top of that comes the new land tax. 1 feci afraid that 1 may have to retire/' Princess Elizabeth rose early to greet her grandparents. There were scenes of old-time pageantry at the castle tonight when 400 tenants and employees, some of whom have served the Earl of Strathmore for a life-time, attended a bail, many being kilted.
