BATEA

FOOTBALL With only a few bright interludes, the match between Batea and Athletic seniors on the local ground was not a good showing of either teams’ best, both teams not seeming to take the match seriously. Batea lost the toss, and for the first half had the sun and the light breeze in their faces. Both teams had equal share of the game, but the Batea forwards worked slightly bette rthan their opponents. Both teams had several juniors playing, Batea playing Batcrson, Maule and Willis, all of whom put up a good showing, Baterson especially doing splendid work down the sideline. The score was made up of four tries, and a penalty goal, while Athletic’s were a converted try and a try.

The following ig the Batea team as it lined out: Spooner, Baterson, .1. Crawford, Maule, Betersen, McDowell, Zimmerman, B. Bourke, R. Willis, Couch, Walker, Baldwin, Wills, Richards and Baldwin. The Athletic team were as follows: Smith, Young, Morrissey, Campbell, Dowdle, Dymond, Gudgeon, Dickson Bokau, Ritter, Balmer, Bhilip, Meharry, Herbert and Tippett. Batea lost the toss, and played with the sun and a light breeze in their faces. Batea played an attacking game throughout the first spell. Within a few minutes of the kick-off, Botersen, following up a kick by Zimmerman, secured and went over to score. His own kick failed. From a clearance kick by Athletic’s full back, Crawford got possession and scored the second try for Batea. Athletic forwards now took a hand in the game and carried play into Batea’s territory. Tippett secured and went over for a neat try. Morrissey converted. Batea once more attacked, and Maule after a dash down the line, looked like scoring, but was forced out at the corner. A knock-on gave Athletic relief for a few minutes. From play in midfield, Baterson brought the ball back to Athletic’s twenty-live with a pretty dash down the side-line. From loose play almost on the line, C. Wills got possession and forced his way over to score. The kick failed. Athletic put in :i strong rush from the kick-out, and play was carried to Batea’s territory. After a few minutes of scrambling play, the Athletic half sent the ball tu Dymond to cross the line, his try being unconverted. Half time sounded with the scores: Batea 9, Athletic 8. With sun and breeze behind them, Batea forwards set the play at a hard pace, but a pass in a movement by the backs went astray, and Athletic gained relief from a penalty kick. An attempt to score by Athletic was checked by a penalty for off-side play. Following a dash by Dymond and Yeung, Crawford secured and sent Baterson away in a pretty dash down the side-line. When confronted by Athletic’s full-back he passed to W. Baldwin, who went over unopposed to score between the posts. Ihe kick failed. In succeeding play, Gudgeon made a dash for the line but bpooner cleared. Bourke, backed by his forwards, took play to midfield, where play was of a scrambling nature until time sounded with the scores: Batea 15, Athletic 8. Mr Clapham refereed.
