MAYOR ON WHITE CHARGER
GRAND CIVIC PAGEANT. Maidstone recently held a grand civic and industrail pageant, a Lord Mayor’s Show in miniature. The mayor of the borough, Mr H. G. Tyrwiiitt-Drake, was promoter, organiser, and moving spirit of the event, which marked his fifth year of office. Maidstone’s mayor is a man of many interests. He owns one of the largest private zoos in Britain and runs his own circus. He has already raised £l5OO for Alaidstone hospitals, and on the occasion in question he gathered in more money for them by his grand pageant. He wore p scarlet robe and cocked hat, with his gold chain of office, and rode a prancing white charger in the mile-long procession. The whole civic body, with represen tatives of the Church, turned out. in State to accompany the mayor on his progress through the streets of the town. The trades and industries of Kent’s capital, notably paper-making and brewing, wore represented by decorated cars and tableaux.
