WAS IT A MISTAKE?

SPEARFUL IN AVONHEAD A special message from Christchurch states that Spearful, not Spear Lad, is the horse on the minimum (8.0) in th,e second division of the Avonhead Hack Handicap, seven furlongs. It is worth noting that at his most recent start at the Otaki winter meeting, Spearful carried 8.10 (seven stone minimum) and ran second to Spearform in the Ranguiru Hack Handicap, one mile and 55 yards. Prior to that meeting he had carried 9.7 in the Highweight Hack Handicap, one mile and a quarter, eight-stone minimum, at the Hawke's Bay meeting at Trentham, and had won comfortably. His last win over seven furlongs was at tlje Marton summer meeting, when he carried 8.2 (sevenstone minimum). It would seem that Spearful has a weight to-day that was intended for Spear Lad.
