BRAMWELL MEMORIAL RACE WANGANUI CLUB CONTEST C. WELLER’S TEAM WIN'S K. JOHNSTON'S TEAM RUNNER-UP Under ideal conditions the annual teams’ race for the Bramwell Mcroial L’rophy was run from the residence of Mr W. L. Young last Saturday afternoon. A full gathering of members and supporters turned up to watch the race, and afterwards were hospitably entertained by Mr and Mrs Young. The race itself was full of interest, and was run over ‘he Bramwell course of six miles. Six teams of seven men competed, with live men t® count in each team. Before the race it was seen that the committee had worked well with regard to the selection of the teams and it was very difficult to forecast the winning five. When it is realised that there were only 15 points difference between the winning team and the losers it will be realised that the committee had done their work well. As a result the race was interesting throughout and was enjoyed by the occupants of the cars which followed. Weller Shines. The afternoon was a triumph for C. Weller, for not only was he the individual winner, but his team also won the trophy. His performance was first class, and he reproduced the form which placed him ahead of K. Johnston when they ran at Masterton. After the first mile had been covered he had obtained a slight lead of the two Johnstons and Hoskins. At the foot of the Tayforth Hill they were all together, but when Bristol’s Corner was reached Weller was out of sight of the remainder of the field and going away all the time. His running entirely reversed the decision of last week, when the club championships were held. On Saturday he ran home easily 300 yards ahead of the older men. The two Johnstons ran a steady race together, and with N ortho ver they maintained leading positions throughout the race. Hoskins ran well for several miles but evidently the pace was too hot for him and he dropped back considerably in the last two miles. Newton, after lying eighth for the greater part of the distance, improved over the stetch along Devon Lane, and ran past Cardc. By making use of a little strategy he hung on to Hoskins and slowed up the pace alowing his team mate Bourgeois to catch them up and run i nahead of Hoskins. At Half-way. When Bristol’s Corner was reached, which may be considered to be somewhere near half-way, it is interesting to note that K. Johnston’s team was leading with 68 points. At that point he was in the second position, while Weller’s team was second and occupied the following positions: Weller 1, B. Clark 11, B. Cave 13, Stephenson 21, and Reid 26, the total points numbering 72. The only change in the positions was that Clarke moved into 10th position, Stephenson dropped back to 22 and Reid worked up from 26 to 23 and gained his team three points. Newton’s team was placed third with 75 points, as follows: Newton 7, Bourgeois 8, Moore 15, Collins 22, and D. McKay 23. Newton ami Bourgeois ran into positions 5 and 6, Moore remained in the 15th ,and while Collins moved' to 21 D. McKay dropped back to 27. Thus the points at the finish numbered 74. K. Johnston’s team w r as third with 78 points, as compared with his 80 at the finish. Johnston was lying secon I at Bristol’s, Cardc was 6, Irvin 16, Gowan 19, and Pemberthy 25. Johnston maintained his position, but Cardc dropped back to 9 and Irvin to 20. Gowan retained his position but Pemberthy went back to 30, and thus the \aluable 12 points was lost which finally placed the team third with 80 points. The teams of G. Johnston and F. Hoskins were lying equal Avith 83 points each, and it was interesting to see how it was that G. Johnston’s team took the ultimate fourth position with 76 points, while Hoskins’ team dropped back to 84, and took sixth. At Birstol’s G. Johnston was 3, Minnell 9, M. Granville 14, Edwards 27, and K. Bilderbeck 30. While Johnston remained in the number 3 position, Minncll moved up to 8, Granville 12, Edwards dropped to 29 and K. Bildorbcck ran up six places into the 24th position. On the other hand at Bristol’s Hoskins was lying 4, Arnold 12, WisneAvski 18, Law 20 and Edo 29. At the finish Hoskins had dropped back to the 7th position, and Arnold to 14. Wisnewski ran up to .7, Luav to 18 and Ede to 28. Thus Hoskins’ team lost a point while Johnston’s gained 7. Northover had a hard row to hoe throughout the afternoon. Nevertheless that did not prevent him from running into fifth place with his team and placing last year’s winning captain last in the finish position occupied by the teams . At Bristol’s, Northover himself was running fifth, the position in which he finished in the club championships last week, A. McKay was 10, L. Bildcrbcck 17, Vincent 24. and Cryscll 31. These positions gave the team 87 points, which placed them definitely last out of the six. At that point the positions were, K. Johnston 68, C. Weller 72, Newton 75, G. Johnston 83, F. Hoskins S 3, and Northover 87. The following were the final positions of the teams: First C. Weller 1 B. Clark ]0 B. Cave 13 L. Stephenson 22 C. Reid 23 m otal 69 Second 11. N 'v ton ...... 5 A.
