FOXTON JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD DISCUSSION OF FINANCES The annual meeting of members of the Foxton Racing Club was held last week, being presided over by Mr W. E. Barber (president). There was an attendance of 24 members. The president, in extending a welcome to members, referred to the loss the club had suffered by the demise during the past year of Messrs A. Brooke-Taylor, L. Robinson, and J. Kebell (Levin). The late Mr Kebbell was one of the original trustees of the racecourse and had taken a keen interest in the club’s affairs right up to the time of his death, and had even attended a meeting just prior to that under great difficulties, said the president. Motions of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the deceased gentlemen. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. In commenting on the club’s financial position the president said that when the increased taxation was taken into consideration the profit and loss account compared more than favourably with previous years. The club had, nevertheless, been placed in an awkward position, in common with other chibs, by the Government’s increased taxation. To assist its finances during the year it had been found necessary to sell some of the trees around the course. The club had, however, taken steps to replace the trees. The United Sports Association had assisted the club by the loan of £lOO. Mr Woods pointed out that the rates were very high. The president said that the rates were a tremendous rent. The club was unfortunate in having its course situated within the borough. The club had taken the necessary steps to obtain a reduction in rates a short time ago, when a substantial allowance was made. Mr D. Christie said the club would have to take immediate steps toward assisting its finances and he asked if it was intended to follow the Govern ment’s lead and reduce all wages and salaries by ten per cent., and possibly also the stake money. The president said that the committee had already undertaken certain

eeouuiny measures and the stakes were reduced last meeting. Mr K. Bryant suggested that Foxtoa should follow Otaki’s lead—tho members assisting in the conduct of the meeting. By all positions being filled h'i)'” 11 " 17 thC Club CUuld be raved lhe matter was fully discussed and members offered their services voluntarily. It was decided to discuss the matter further at the next committee meeting and, if adopted, to convene a special meeting for tho purpose of selecting volunteers. Mr W. Kirkland submitted a proposal for the introduction of two trotting events each day and tho reversion to eight races a day. Mr Christensen (Oroua Downs), a trotting enthusiast, explained what steps would bo necessary for tho innovation anil guaranteed the club 30 entries and tho stake money if tho suggestion were adopted. It would also be the means of obtaining new members and creating greater interest in tho club, ho said. It was decided to recommend tho suggestion to tho committee for investigation and adoption. The matter of reducing tho subscription from £2 2s to £1 Is was discussed mid did not meet with the approval of members. The following officers were elected unopposed:—President, Mr J. R. Mr 11. .Simmons (Mangawhata) made eulogistic reference to tho work of the president. He said that Mr Barber had served the club well over a number of years. Ho expressed tho hope that he would be spared to fill tho position of president for many years to come. His remarks were endorsed by others. Mr Barber thanked tho speakers for their good wishes and said he had been introduced to the Foxffm Club by the patron (Mr Whyte) many years ago, when quite young. He had been elected a steward and in that capacity had served the club until elected to his present position. He extended his sincere thanks tn the stewards and members for their loyal and willing s pport. Mr Barber also extended his congratulations to Mr R. Bryant, whoso horse. Arikira, won the Nolan Cup at the Egmont meeting. Tho trophy, which is a handsome gold cup, was on exhibition and tho president said it was the first occasion on which a local horse had won a gold cup. The accomplishment only wont to show what locally trained horses could do.
