CHARGE OF THEFT
EX CITY COUNCIL CASHIER. JURY FAILS TO AGREE. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, July 31. After a retirement of about four hours, a Supreme Court jury failed to agree upon a verdict wherein Arthur Wallace Richardson, formerly cashier in the rates office of the Wellington City Council, was charged with theft as a servant of £96 Is 2d. An application by the Crown for a retrial at the current session was granted. Accused was allowed bail. Accused, in evidence, said he hud been employed by the council for nine years as cashier. During that time he had banked probably £10.000,000 or more. Previously to that he had been on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand for about 14 years. After the war, in which he suffered concussion and was badly wounded, he was pay sergeant to a hospital in England. He had not been before the Court previously. He denied that he had stolen the money and said that an allegation of theft had never been made against him previously. He was not a racing man and only rarely took a “spot.” His circumstances were not poor and he had no occasion to steal.
