CHINESE GOOSEBERRY

A LUSCIOUS FRUIT. Actinidia Chinenesis, the Chinese gooseberry, is a remarkable climber of distinct foliage ami vigorous growth, it produces a luscious fruit much esteemed for dessert as well as for jam ami jelly. The leaves are broad and bright green, and the young growths are coveted with reddish hairs. To secure crops of fruits it is necessary to plant both male and female vines. As seedlings cannot be depended upon to produce the necessary sexes for policnation purposes resort must be had to plants propagat ed by' grafting. One male to about live or six females, arranged at regular distance in the rows, is sufficient. Grafts should be taken from the largest ami best-flavoured fruiting old vines, as those produced from seedling* vary- very much in size and quality. For commercial planting it is most import ant to grow the best type. The dis tance apart to plant should not be closer than lOl’t., as each plant with age pro duces long shoots.
