HIGHWAY ESTIMATES

NUMBER EIGHT DISTRICT 1 THE AMOUNTS APPROVED At yesterday’s meeting of the No. 8 District Highways Council a study was made of the financial requirements for the ensuing year. It is the practice for various highway council’s to meet and deal with applications by respective local bodies. After arriving at decisions as to the most urgent works estimates are adopted and these are bmitted for ; approval to the Main Highways Board. At yesterday’s meeting Mr P. Keller (district highways engineer) presided, aud Mr W. Morrison, a member of the Main Highways Board, was present in an advisory capacity. The counties of Patea, Waitotara, Wanganui, Rangitikei, and Waimarino were represented. Estimates Submitted Prefacing discussion on the estimates the chairman said that the allocations for the district wero £50,000 for maintenacc and for construction £16,000 from the radial luud and £12,000 for ordinary construction. Mr Morrison said that the Highwavs Board was going on tho assumption that it would get the same amount from tho Government this year as last. If that was to bo reduced it would mean curtailment. Estimates were approved as follows: Ordinary Construction Patea County: £475 for metalling the Kohi Road; £l2O for metalling the Waverley Beach Road. A £75 liability has already been incurred on tho K.hi Road, and authority has been given for £56 5s 9d. Total estimate for Patea £595. ■Waitotara County: £350 for metalling the Uangitatau East Watershed Road (Paparangi). This work is in progress. Wanganui County: Nil. Rangitikei County: Buils-Taumaru-nui highway, widening of Ross and Stell’s bridges £530; Hautapu River Bridge, £4OOO (work in hand); Maungaraupi Bridge, £670; total estimate, £5lOO. It was decided that the estimates for Ross, Stells and Maungaraupi bridges be regarded at in No. 2 group of estimates. Waimarino County: £338 for Mangaehuehu Bridge; £133 Makara Bridge —total estimate £671. It was reported that, with atehing, tho Makara Bridge work could stand for a year. In addition to tho foregoing the Council decided to approve of the following estimates under the ordinary construction head: — To bo expended by tho Alain Highways Board: Waitangi Strc r Bridge, £500; Hoeremaiea Stream Bridge, £500; Makotuku Stream Bridge, £1000; Manganuiateao Stream Bridge, £1000; Tohunga Road deviation £378, balance of vote; metalling 210 chains Tohunga Road deviation in clay gap, £3015. All these items are free giants and are to be expended on the BuilsTaumarunui Mair Highway’. A sum of £BOO was estimated for metalling the clay portion of the Pipiriki-llaehiti Highway and £6OO for construction work in connection with McLean’s tunnel and filling on the WanganuiHoropito Main highway. These fig ures made a total of £7793 to bo ex ponded by tho Main Highways Board direct. The estimates also included £250 for work not specified and £299 for engineering and surveys this bringing the total estimate for ordinary construction up to £15,118 for tho year. Radial Road Construction. Regulations of tho Main Highways Board permit a subsidy of £3 for £1 in respect to roads radiating from centres of 6000 opulation and over. Under this head hero were three items submitted for the Council’s decision in respect to estimates; £9OOO for sealwork on the Goat Valley-Waitotara section of tho Auckland-Wellington Main Highway. £1132 in respect to sealing tho Wangaehu Hill, and £lO,000 for reconstruction (sealing) of the same highway from Wangaehu to Bulls. The Council approved of these estimates, making tho total estimated under the radial fund of £20,132. Maintenance Estimates. The following estimates for maintenance in respect to highways under various local bodies in tho district were approved:— Prisons’ Department ..... ..... 1,850 Patea County 8,811 Waitotara County 6,719 Wanganui County ...... ..... 5,164 Kangitikei County 13,207 Waimarino County 6,814 Patea Borough - 150 Waverley Town Board ‘960 Bulls Town Board ..... 213 Marton Borough 230 Hunterville Town Board SIS Mangaweka Town Board 2,222 Taihape "orough 813 Raetihi Borough .... 809 Ohakune Borough 503 Main Highways Board to be expended direct 2,750 It should be noted that these estimates represent the Highways Board's portion only of tho expenditure on various roads. Before they can bo made available each Iqcal body’s share must bo found.
