ALLEGED THEFT
EX-CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEE WELLINGTON FUNDS MISSING [ Per Press Association. ] a WELLINGTON, June 17. J Formerly a cashier in the City ratey office, Arthur Wallace Richardson, middle-aged, was committed by Mr E< Pag j, B.AL, in the Police Court to-day to the Supremo Court for trial on a, charge of theft as servant, of £96 Is tho property of the City Council. j It was alleged that this sum, receive cd over the counter on April 23, ha<f not been lodged to the credit of ths district fund in the bank. Accused was allowed bail on a bond of £IUQ with a surety for a similar amount. It was stated in evidence that accused used the current day’s takings ta make up tho previous day’s banking total, which was made up to 3.30 the takings after that going to tho next day’s totals. When the fact that the money was missing was discovered accused denied knowledge. At first it was believed that the money had been removed from the safe by some person who had obtained means of access. Accused said that it was possible to open the safft with a pen-knife. Tho safe was kept in the strong-room, which had a burglar alarm to it. The caretaker gave'evidence that the alarm went on Anzac night and once about Easter. They never found who it was caused it to start.
