WANGANUI ART SOCIETY

EXHIBITION OPENING SHORTLY BIGGEST FOR MANY YEARS. The exhibition to be held at tho Sarjeant Art Gallery shortly by the Wanganui Art Society promises to be one of the best for many years. Over two tons of pictures are to be hung and amongst them will be about two-thirds of those which were exhibited a; Auckland recently, including some pictures from Dunedin. Among the noted artists whoso works will be on view will be Mr John Weekes, who occupies a prominent position in the world of art, Mr d’Auvergne Boxall and Mr I. M. Copeland, who will be now to Wanganm. In addition to pictures from Auckland and Dunedin there will also be exhibits from Christchurch, Wellingtong, Nelson and Murchison. Mr Menzies Gibbs and Mr Wall work are sending a full quota of pictures from Christchurch while amongst those from Wellington which will attract much attention will be Mr Roland’s Hipkins ’ “A Wellington Suburb.*' This work was the centre of much attraction at the recent exhibtion at Wellington. From Palmerston North Mr Linley Richardson, 8.8. A., is sending eight pictures.

Other artists who will be exhibiting are Miss Collier, Mr Vincent Evans, A.R.C.A., Mr Spencer Smith, Mr C. Hay Campbell, Mrs V. E. Whiteman, and Mr and Mrs Neame, all of whom are well known to the people who appreciate art in Wanganui. On«* of the features of the Wanganui exhibition will be the large number of contributions from the younger members of the Society who show decided promise and talent. It is somewhat invidious to differentiate between them as to those which stand out, though it is expected that Miss Betty Paul’s work will bo commended for the exceptional ability which has been shown by the young artist. Owing to the largo number of entries that have been received, tho opening day of the exhibition has hot yet been decided. It was to have taken place next Tuesday, but at tho present moment it seems likely that the ceremony will have to be postponed for a day or two.
