BAETIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council was held in tho Coun cil Chambers on Thursday night when there were present: The Mayor, Air W. Harris, Councilors T. 8. Hogg, G. 11. Parkes, J. H. Stanley, R. Ciochetto, L. J. Vile, Torn Shout, C. A. L. McDonald, A. E. Willoughby and W. 11. Sandford, the Borough Foreman, Air E. Davis, tho electrical engineer, Air Journeaux, and the Town Clerk, Air J. 11. Lucus. The manager of the Bank of New Zealaud advised that tho overdraft limit was £5OOO with time commitment. Air G. Audcr; i applied for a slaughterhouse license. The stock inspector, Air R. A_ Thompson, recommended the renewal of the license. It was resolved to recommend the Stock Department to grant tho license. Licenses to drive public motor vehicles were granted to A. G. Urwin, A. Al. Hughes, G. R. AlcAlistcr, W. Cook. ,Mrs D. L. Keucke applied for permission to erect a garage on tho roadside in Grey Street.—lt was agreed not to raise any objection, but the garage must be removed at tho pleasure of tho council. The ranger, Mr K. McKenzie, reported that he had found six head of stock wandering on borough roads. Ono dog was destroyed. One horse was released under protest and the correctness of tho charge was questioned. The electricity committee recommended that the request of tho Plunket So ciety be referred to tho council with no recommendation. It was explained that tho Plunket Society had requested the council to connect the rooms with the electricity system and give the cost as a donation to tho Society. Engineer’s Report The electrical engineer (Air W. Journeaux), submitted tho following report: The main generating plant has operated satisfactorily during the period. There was one interruption to the service, duo to a sheep blocking tho bypass valve at intake, thus diverting the water back into the Alakara Stream and causing a serious shortage of water at storage basin. The work of diverting the Makotuku is progressing satisfactorily. Practically tho entire length of cut has been opened up, the grading, battering and stepping still requiring to be done. A start has been mad© with the tunnel. Considerable maintenance work has been done to the existing head-races. Line and other maintenance work has been carried out. Tho Public Works engineers have inspected lines, plant and wiring in the area, and their report will bo submitted in due course. Units generated for month, total, 53,110 and gallons of water pumped for month. 1,604.912. Tho Mayor reported that tho tender! of J. Holt had been accepted for posts ami T. E. Berry for delivery of battens and strainers at the deviation, works. Tho action of tho. sub-commit-tee was approved. GENERAL At the meeting of the Borough Council members noticed that the ranger was evidently no respecter of persons The name of ono councillor appeared twice, and a resident whose duty it is to seo that all laws are obeyed was also included in the list handed in at last meeting. On Thursday night the Mayor informed the Borough Council that the Wanganui Hospital Board would not provide money to pay rent in charitable aid cases. Every case would have to bo taken to see that no residents were allowed to be in want of food. Councillor Sandfofd pointed out that with the stoppage of the unemployment schemes tho charitable aid funds would bo called upon to bear heavy burdens. No one could bo allowed to go in want of food, but the authorities must seo that the ratepayers’ money is used to best advantage where required. The ratepayers had to find the money.

Last year Raetihi Borough Council spent £3l 19s 4d in advertising and the finance committee has instructed the Town Clerk to make inquiries and endeavour to make some arrangement with , the local paper for a quotation at reduced rates. When not used for municipal notices tho space could be used for advertising the sale of “juice,” said one councillor. “Buy more juice,” said he, “could bo printed when there was nothing else and a contract for a year at. reduced rates bo obtained by the council.” Tho Borough Council has decided that proceedings bo taken against all persons caught riding cycles on tho footpaths. Several cases of narrow escapes from accidents have lately occurred. Women with perambulators have had to get out of the way of cyclists on the footpaths. The staff was instructed to be vigilant and issue summonses against all persons caught offending. It. was stated that in the main thoroughfares as well as in the back streets, cycles were ridden on tho paths to the danger of pedestrians. PERSONAL Air D. Scarrow, the well-known amateur wrestler, is at present an inmate of the Duncan Street private hospital for treatment to his leg. Mrs G. Watkinson, who has been on a visit to her parents, returned to Na pier on Wednesday. Mrs A. G. Laloli, of Pitt Street, is still an inmate of the hospital, but is making satisfactory progress.
