SCARCITY OF FLOWERS
VARIETIES FOR PLANTING. At present there is a remarkable Jcarcity of flowers for garden decora tion and cutting. This will continue for some time. Fortunately the advent of the improved varieties* of Iceland poppies is a much prized and welcome addition to winter flowering plants for all purposes. The Chinese sacred lily, narcissi]-, with double yellow and white cup and white perianth, is now flowering free! . as well as the paper white. Both are welcome additions to arly flowers. Gaillardias, single dwarf French mangold, Josephine, calendulas, a few sweet sultans and erica autumnalis, a few veronicas and Dahlia leolis, with some perpetual carnations and violets, comprise the leading flowers at present. As the demand becomes greater resort must be had to growing flowering plants under glass and forcing varieties mn< suitable for the purpose. In Europe and America an enormous tridc .s done in the cultivation cf flowers at all seasons. Many varieties of biubs, rones, carnations, lilacs ami several other flowering shrubs ami herbaceous plants are forced into flower out of season. A start has been made locally in growing lady’s slipper or eypripedium orchids under glass. Carnations might be profitably grown in glass joisc-. I
