Fortunately the advent of the improved varieties* of Iceland poppies is a much prized and welcome addition to winter flowering plants for all purposes. Gaillardias, single dwarf French mangold, Josephine, calendulas, a few sweet sultans and erica autumnalis, a few veronicas and Dahlia leolis, with some perpetual carnations and violets, comprise the leading flowers at present. As the demand becomes greater resort must be had to growing flowering plants under glass and forcing varieties mn< suitable for the purpose. In Europe and America an enormous tridc .s done in the cultivation cf flowers at all seasons. Many varieties of biubs, rones, carnations, lilacs ami several other flowering shrubs ami herbaceous plants are forced into flower out of season. A start has been made locally in growing lady’s slipper or eypripedium orchids under glass. Carnations might be profitably grown in glass joisc-. I
