FIRST AID
A HURT SPINr. A slip on a stairway is quite a coni mon accident, and usually does little harm beyond causing slight bruising uvci the spine. The. pain, however, is sharp, especi ally on bending, and there is tenderness over the affected part aal sometimes swelling. Bruising appears later because of the rupture of’ tiny blood vessels, and the patient holds herself stiffly to avoid moving the injured part. R 3Jt in bed is necesary, but this should not be unduly prolonged. H>t foment a tious changed frequently give great iclief, and when the acute pain has gone begi i massage with haiim-et to p«evei»t lastii.g stiffness. If tho fall has been a severe one there may be in addition to pain other symptoms, because the real danger in this type of case is damage to die spinal cord. In this case treatment should certainly be left to a doctor.
