Session Closes. The Supreme Court session at Wanganui closed yesterday after a some what light sitting. Observing Empire Day A notice in the current issue of the Gazette states that Empire Day. which is usually celebrated on Alay 24, will this year be observed in conjunction with the King’s Birthday on June 3. This day will be. observed as a holiday in Government departments as well as in banking and commercial circles generally. The observance of tho two holidays together this year is on account of the fact that Alay 24 falls on a Sunday. Meeting Unemployment A sub-committee meeting of tho Wanganui Unemployment Committee was held yesterday morning. Seven applications were received for the No. 4 A Scheme, which puts men on the land under Government subsidy for a period ranging up to 28 weeks. The meeting was attended by the Rev. I*l. T. Cox, and Messrs J. D. Crowley. E. AV. F. Gohns, J. S. L. Deem, and D. Dwyer. Air Crowley was elected chairman of the sub-committee. The Women’s Division. To Mrs W. J. Polson the formation of tho Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union must ever remain something of highly pleasant memory. This organisation has developed to an amazing strength and is playing a big part in the well being of New Zetina I. 'ld ibutes to the foresightedness of Airs Polson in sponsoring its creation, and to the. courage and determination of such leaders as Mrs C. C. Jackson (Wai rarapa) were made at the inter-pro-vincial conference of the Farmers’ Union at Palmerston North this week. Probably the most important toast at the social gathering on the AVednesday night was that of “The AVomcn’s Division.” Next day the conference felt grateful for a refreshing cup of tea which the Palmerston North branch id’ the IDivision caused to make a pleasant intrusion during the afternoon’s business. Not content with returning thanks in a formal way, delegates, under the lead of Farmer Daysb, sang to the lady visitors, cheered them and commended the fine spirit which pervades their organisation. Mrs H. Bind (Rangiotu) responded and said that although the Division was voung, it recognised the part it had to play and was endeavou ing to play it with all its might.
