HINEMOA WIN TOURNEY OLD GIRLS A BEATEN WAXGAM 1 MATCHES Saturday’s hockey in Wanganui provided two surprises. Wesley (J fought out the final with tno strong Hineiiioa A team in th? final of the men’s six-a side tournament, being beaten by two goals. The other surprise was that. Old Girls A was beaten for the first time for five years. The men’s tournament did not finish till late, while the ladies’ matches were continuing the usual championship fixtures. The results of the sections’ play in the men’s tournament were: Section A. Hinemoa A 6, Wesley It 0. Hinemoa A 4, Star C 1. Star C I, Wesley B 0. Section B. Wesley A 4, Hinemoa .B 1. Star A 3, Hinemoa B U. Star A 3, Wesley A 0. Section C. Wesley C 2, Tech. A J. Wesley C and Tech. A each won from Old Boys B by default. The Finals. In the semi-final Hinemoa A met the Star A team and after a hard fought game won by a goal. Mclntyre was the one to score. The game produced some good hockey and wast fast and even. Hinemoa C and Wesley C had a vciy hard tussle in the other semi-final. At the whistle for time there had been no score and the teams in the semi-finals had agreed that penalty corners should not count. Extra time was played and Wesley were the first to drive the ball behind their opponents’ goal line. IDusk was falling when Wesley faced Hinemoa Ain the final. Wesley broke away at the start, and then McIntyre set off down the field for Hincmoa, but a free hit held him up. The younger players were tackling the Hinemoa men quickly. Wesley were battling and playing bunched together to back each other up, while the older men were out for positional play. Wesley worked in cluse and then ex pcrience allowed the Hinemoa men to clear. The first half ended without score. Wesley started to swing the ball about in the second half. Capping a combined attack by Connell and id. Hughes, the latter scored for Hinemoa. Later, after the ball had travelled about a fair bit, Connell secured and put in a long run to add another goal for Hinemoa. It was the final score. Ladies. Star A 1, Old Girls A 0. Star B 1, Old Girls B J.
