PROTECTIVE TARIFFS
AID TO LOCAL INDUSTRIES. DANGER OF INEFFICIENCY. Comment upon the system of protec live tariffs which has grown up in New Zealand was made by Air. A. M. beaman in tho course of an address upon the rationalization of industry to the Auckland Creditmen’s Club. Mr. Seaman pointed out that it was behind the shelter of these tariffs that the country’s manufacturing industries had grown up. Under present conditions he thought that not even the most ardent free trader would advocate the complete removal of those duties. However, there was a danger that if nn industry was finding j difiicui' to meet the competition of the imported article, tho manufacturer might endeavour to lay tho blame upon tho lower wage standard of the exporting country, rather than attribute it to a possible weakness at this end. It was easier to ask for. and perhaps easier to obtain, an addition to the protective duty than to adopt, the somewhat, heroic measures licit rationalization of the. industry would involve, but tho interests of the community as a whole demanded that, duties should not be imposed to protect inefficiency.
