NEW ZEALANDERS’ TOUR

BRIGHT CRICKET SCORING DEMPSTER BRILLIANT MATCH WITH HAMPSHIRE LONDON, May 14. The New Zealand cricketers are in a good position in the match against Hampshire. The county side was dismissed in the first innings for 190. Barfield and Judd were sent back in quick succession. A valuable partnership between Mead and Kennedy added sixty before Kennedy was bowled by Matheson. Lowndes and Creese were disposed of cheaply. Mead, hitting with unusual freedom, attempted to reach the century by means of an impossible third run with the result that Boyes was run out. Bartley ran for his first stroke and was sent, back to the pavilion through the agency of a fine return by Kerr. Mead was bowled by Matheson in the next over, still requiring a single for his 100, which would have enabled him to equal Grace’s 126 centuries. Hampshire’s innings concluded when Baring was caught in the slips, leaving New Zealand 8 ahead on the first strike. Matheson bowled excellently, swing ing late occasionally. He sent down twenty-six overs. Merritt was fre quently dangerous. New Zealand made a good start in the second innings. Mills and Blunt, wore both caught off snicks by the wicketkeeper. Dempster was again brilliant, employing a variety of shots and was undefeated at 86 when stumps were drawn for the day. Scores were as follows: Hampshire.
