PURPOSES OIL SERVES
Before the beginner runs his engine he must, take pains to ascertain that tho tank is well supplied with oil and that the oiling system is working. The engine is tho most expensive item on the machine, and carelessness about oil may wreck it. in a very few minutes as completely as if ho pul, it under a steam hammer. The oil serves two main purposes. First, it; is a vital element in the cooling. The piston, for example, is almost, continuously expos ed to flame, but is never in contact with the outside air. Its temperature is reduced to a small degree by repeated contact with tho fresh charges of cool gas; but. it is mainly prevented from being melted under flame by the oil, which carries much heat away from it. Secondly, the oil reduces friction between moving parts, such as a shaft and its hearing, or the piston and cylinder. I'his service is really 4MH)ther form of cooling.
