A Shock for Policeman Pepper

Last week we saw how Gwen discovered the gorilla, which had escaped from a circus; and was wandering in the fnrest. Of course Gwen’s story disturbed the chums, and early next morning Richard called a meeting to discuss what had better be dona. “1 think." he said, "we ought to find out ii he is still there. ’* "What!" shouted Gwen. “No, thunk you.” "But we must try to recover the bicycle ,'ou left behind." said Richard, “and I’ve got a plan.”

Richard’s plan was a very simple one. * “We must have something to frighten the gorilla,” he said. And then he took them into the shed where he made a bomb with some gun-powder, an old tin, and a piece of string for a wick. * “Do he careful.” urged Gwen. “It might blow- us all up.” “It is perfectly safe until I fire the string." Richard explained. “Even then it will only make a loud hang. If we see the gorilla, it will just frighten him until wo get away.” ’

In case they should meet the gorilla and have to get away quickly, only Richard and Gwen went since they were the fastest runners. Polly insisted tMt »hey carried the bomb in a little hag for safety. XVhen they gol well into the wood they moved along ever so carefully. Gwen wished herself safely at home J “Sh ” said Richard. "I think I can hear something.” "Oh, my,” whispered Gwen, “hadn’t we better go home!”

Richard and Gwen crouched behind a fallen tree trunk and watched to see whatever it was that had made a noise in the bushes just ahead of them. Gwen did not like the adventure a bit. “I’d sooner he safe at home.” she said. "I never did like gorillas." “Oh, don’t worry so,” whispered Richard. “If he moves this way I shall throw the bomb, and that will give us time to get away." "Well!” said Gwen, “I only hope he doesn’t run after us.”

Now Richard and Gwen waited patiently behind that tree trunk for ever so Ung watching to see if the gorilla would come out. for they had quite made up their mindf that he was hiding. At last Richard could stand it no longer. “I’m going to throw the bomb,” he said, "and see what happens.’’ Bang! went the bomb, making a terrific din in the wood. "I’ll bet that's frightened him," said Richard. "He will have a shock.”

But it wm Richard and Gwen who were, to the shock, (or when (her looked er the tree trunk they saw it was Policeman I’epp< i who had been hiding in the hashes. He also had come to look for the escaped gorilla. It was lucky for the two . Chums that poor Pepper never knew what had happened to him! Gwen and Richard i ran homo as fast as they could, as you ran well imagine. Poor Pepper also ran for his life, thinking it was the gorilla who had thrown something at him. Hat mots J about the gorilla next week.
