PREDICTING EARTHQUAKES
PREDICTING earthquakes appears to be the premier occupation of that class of person which has more imagination than knowledge.
This uninformed talk is causing an undercurrent in the minds of some of the people, who are beginning to entertain fears of an impending eatastrophy. This talk should be discouraged because it serves no useful purpose. That earthquakes will again occur in New Zealand cannot be gainsaid, but the prospect of their occurring with frequency can be discounted by reference to past history. Earthquakes have been frequent, but violent disturbances have been rare. There is, in consequence, good reason for entertaining the idea that severe earthquakes will be as equally infrequent in the future.
