Drunkenness. For casting offensive matter, Bob Asker Barnett was fined £3 at the Court on Saturday, and for drunkenness he was convicted and discharged. Fire Brigade Out, The Wanganui Fire Brigade received a call to Anzac Parade at 11 minutes past 12 yesterday to several burning toitoi bushes. The flames were quickly put out with beaters. License Cancelled. At the Court on Saturday, Richard Alex Paul Campbell was charged wit*, being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Ridgway Street. He was fined £2O and his license cancelled until January, 1932. Bath Patronage, The various Wanganui swimming bath custodians report a very busy period over the holidays. Crowds have also gathered at the beaches and many sore bodies tell a tale of over indulg once in sun-bathing. A Great Improvement. Improvements are still being effected to the main north road. Motorists using the road during the Christmas holiday period found little to complain of. The bends are being straightened and the narrow portions of the road widened. A Real Danger. A Wanganui motorist who returned from Taranaki late on Christmas night states that he saw a car parked on the side of the road with no lights burning and the sule occupant stretched fulllength across the scat sound asleep. The vehicle was standing very near to the traffic route and might easily have been the cause of a serious accident. In the Sun All the beaches about Wanganui were well patronised yesterday. Large crowds went to Castlecliff, and several boat loads went to the South Beach, where the improvements carried out by Wanganui River Service: Limited were the subject of much favourable comment. Kai Iwi beach was visited by a large number of swimming enthusiasts. Shopping Hours The shops in Wanganui opened on Saturday morning and did very good business after the holidays. They reopen this morning. The late night this week will be observed on Wednesday evening when the shops will remain open until ten o’clock. They will be closed all day Thursday and Friday, re-opening on Saturday until noon. Life-Saving Competitions New Year’s Day will be a big day for Patca as the annual competitions for the Patea Life-Saving Shield and the Cup for the march past will be held on the beach. Teams from East End (New Plymouth), Castleeliff and Patca will be competing. The Castlecliff team is a strong one and has every hope of acquitting itself with honour. Maori Canoe Men The Koroniti and Tariklno team, which will man the canoe “Te Wehi” which at present holds the War Canoe championship of New Zealand, arrives in camp at Sandy Hook to-morrow io train for the race on New Year’s DayThe women of Koroniti and Parikino will “man” the canoe for the wahine championship. The Waitotara canoe was to have come to \Vanganui yesterday by way of the sea but, due to a misunderstanding, the launch was at Waiunu and the canoe at the mouth of the Waitotara River. The canoe is to be brought to Wanganui to-day. Band Change The spirit of friendly co-operation between the two bands in Wanganui has been further demonstrated by the fact that owing to Mr Gordon Bergenson’s illness, Mr Jack Farrell, of the Garrison Bard, has taken his place temporarily as solo cornet player in the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band. Mr Farrell will be playing with the Queen Alexandra’s Band at the New Year race meeting at Stratford- This band : was playing at Aramoho Park yester- ; day, and the audience was particularly large. The items were well received.
