ON COOK’S GARDENS

VISITORS FROM WELLINGTON VICTORIA UNIVERSITY XI. In glorious weather on Saturday the touring Victoria University XI commenced their match against Wanganui on Cook’s Gardens. Winning the toss they went in to bat, and through the greater part of the day they kept Wanganui fielding in the blazing sun, with the result that they amassed a total of 325 runs before their last wicket fell. Wanganui had 88 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. The match will be resumed at 10.30 a.m. to-day. For the visitors Osborn did best with the bat, notching 124 runs before being caught by Darby off Grant. Included in his score were no fewer than 21 boundary hits, while once he lifted the ball clean out of the ground for six. Wilson (46) and Dormer (45) also did well for the visitors. Naturally the Wanganui bowling average suffered and W. Thrush (three for 43) and Grant (three for 83) accounted for most of the wickets, while Morgan took two for 19. During the brief period in which they batted Wanganui managed to run up a total of 88, but at 'a cost of four wickets. J. Morgan, hitting out with a freedom that, was really inspiring, was responsible for half the total, being still unbeaten with 44 to his credit when stumps were drawn.
