CHARGE OF THEFT

FRANK WILLS REMANDED. HEARING ON MONDAY. As the audit was not complete. Frank Fabian Wills, solicitor, carrying on business as Slipper and Wills, Wanganui, was remanded to appear on December .15, when hc came before Messrs D. McFarlane and H. W. Cooper. J.P.’s, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with the theft of £470, the property of William Palmer. Detective Walsh asked for a remand to December .15. Mr W. J. Treadwell said that he did not object to the remand to Monday next, but they were particularly anxious that there should be no further remand, and that the matter should bo disposed of then. They were not for one moment suggesting that accused had not, unfortunately, misappropriated the money in the present charge. They had been perfectly frank with Detective Walsh, and had advised him of some other matters. Counsel pointed out that the long vacation commenced on December and 2(1 and went to January 31. No judge might be available during that period. The unfortunate man should be put out of his misery, and get his sentence, and be done with the matter as soon as possible. Counsel said that they would assist the police in every possible way to clear up the whole matter, so that the case could be disposed before the Christinas holidays. He would like it reported that the charge was against Frank Fabian Wills, carrying on business in Wanganui as Slipper and Wills.

Detective Walsh said that hc was just as anxious to have the case disposed of, but until the audit was completed the police would not be in a position to go on. Mr D. AfcFarlane asked if the audit was proceeding as quickly as possible.

Mr Treadwell said that it was practically complete, and the police should be in possession of the full information that day. He repeated that Detective Walsh could get any information he liked from counsel. There would be no objection at all. It was recognised that there was no defence. The remand was then granted.
