WOODVILLE RACES

MEETING CONCLUDES FAVOURITES’ DAY OUT ARROW LAD AND HUNTING CRY (By ( ‘ Kestrel.”) Fine weather again prevailed yesterday for the concluding day of the Woodville Club’s summer meeting, and conditions were, as on the opening day, excellent for racing. Track conditions were again perfect, and the racing throughout was most enjoyable, some thrilling finishes being staged. It was essentially a day for favourites, the form on the opening day serving backers as a guide to a certain extent, and no fewer than six uf the winners were the elect of investors. They did a “trot” by winning the first five races on the card, while the only favourites to fail to get into the money was Pakitere in the sixth race. Tripping, the favourite in the seventh race, was third, and in the eighth event the favourite, Kahikatoa, was first home. Some of the prices were extremely cramped, and an investment of £1 on each of the favourites would have returned backers a profit of £l2 17s 6d. The principal event, the Gothard Memorial Handicap, was won by the consistent Arrow Lad. who scored with considerable ease at the finish after being in the lead for the greater part of the journey. Thus he made amends for his defeats at Feilding and his second at Woodville on Tuesday. The manner in which he won would lead one to expect further successes before the holiday racing carnival is over. In running second High Falutin’ did well after standing the winner up a good start over the final stages. He is another that should soon do better. Paratoo. who did not have the best of passages on Tuesday, was ridden by the Hawke’s Bay apprentice, Alf Macdonald, and secured the minor placing. Atholspear and Mountain Heath were others to impress, while White Fang should be considerably improved before long. ,

It was a case of “quality tells” in the Railway Handicap, for in the class that contested the open sprint Hunting Cry was able to concede his opponents from 281 b. to 381 b. and then win comfortably. The Hunting Song gelding is engaged in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and is in great form just now. His supporters had to be content with a very short price. Royal Parade ran a good race and beat all but. the winner, but he had to stretch out at the finish to keep Keddar out of second place. Keddar is sure to improve. Dobbin went a good race and Taranto shaped like an parly winner. The Hastings-trained Kahikatoa, who had led the field home in the Borough Handicap on Tuesday, was again successful in the last race of the day, giving Gray his fourth winning mount at the meeting. The Arausio gelding won just as easily as on the first day and his sequence of wins does not appear ended vet. Tahoma, who finished second, should be kept in mind, while Desert Song and Bold Front are due before the holiday racing concludes. The Papataua Hurdles saw Easterly repeat her Feilding win, but this time the Acre marc had verv little to spare at the finish. She led at the last hurdle but ran out wide and was headed by Evening Hero. It was only in the last few strides that Easterly caught Evening Hero, much to the relief of the backers of the odds-on favourite, who returned the shortest price of the day for a winner. Evening Hero should soon be a winner Beverage won the Novice Stakes detisivclv at the finish, though two furlongs from home the issue was still in doubt. Brambletorn, who was paying over a quarter of a century for a win. headed the second favourite on - the post, much to the edification of his few supporters. Chief Savage should not be long winning. . The Juvenile Handicap resulted in a typical finish by Gray bringing the favourite Esteem home by the narrowest of margins. A furlong from home it appeared as if Esteem would not be able to get clear, but once Gray got an opening he drove his mount through and fairlv lifted him over the last few yards. The Pombal-Eulogy gelding responded well to his rider’s demands. Chief Cook ran a splendid race, as also did Hampden, while AH Humbug ran the best race of the others. The start, however, was not of the best. One of the best races run by Acmil was in the Kiritaki Hack Handicap, which the Acre filly won with a did run at the finish, flying over thlast fifty yards. Statuary went a good race and is due shortly. Pewa, who had graduated from maiden ranks at Feilding. proved himself a good sort by winning the stewards’ Handicap at the right end. sensational dividend was returned and the supporters of N'ea Lap, who finished second, boating the favourite. Tripping, a head. She is a sister to that "alloping freak, Phar Lap, though not to bo compared with her elder brother. As there was onlv £l4 invested on er it was a dividend of over a score that was returned. Nea Lap may win many races but she does not impress as being likely to emulate Phar Lap s.feats. The stipendiarv stewards in-titut?<i an inquirv into the running of Lord like in the Stewards’ Handicap, but it was announced that, though the stewards did not consider Barry’s explanation entirely satisfactory the eu'W.e did not warrant further action being taken. Easterly’s Short Price. Nine started for the Papatawa Hurdles, Easter]v being backed down to a Gloaming price, carrying £-J2, wnicn was more than twice as much as o i Evening Hero (£139). Half Acre was the early leader, being followed by Easterly, Evening Hero, Lady Alophen and Roi de Vai. Passing the stands Half Acre was clear from Easterly, Kaokaoroa. Shining Armour, Lady Alophen, Black Acre and Evening Hero, and this order was maintained down the back, where the field bunched. Crossing the top Easterly was just in front of Kaokaoroa, Half Acre and Shining Armour, with Evening Hero

improving his position. Easterly ran out at the last fence and Evening Hero headed the favourite, but the latter came again and got up in time to win by a neck. Kaokaoroa was third, four lengths behind Evening Hero, and then there was a gap of eight lengths back to Shining Armour, Lady Alophen and Whakaari. Beverage Wins Novi-o Stakes. Backers were again on the mark in the second race, the Novice Stakes, in which Beverage (£413) was an evenmoney favourite, with Chief Savage (£279) the only other enquired for, and Brambletorn at a long price, there being only £3l on him. Queen’s Salute was badly left and Blacksmith, Kalmuk, Beverage, Flute and Enter showed out across the top, where he followed Blacksmith, while Beverage, Hoi de Vai, Kalmuk and Mon Roi were next. There was little change on the turn for home, but when they straightened up Beverage camo through on the rails and won nicely by a length. Brambletorn boat Chief Savage by a head for second place, and Blacksmith, Flute, Kalmuk and Gueress were in close attendance. Arrow Lad’s Easy Win. Blimp was the defection from the Gothard Memorial Handicap, in which Arrow Lad (£350), White Fang (£337) and High Falutin’ (£315) were evenly backed. They got away well, Paraton and Arrow Lad showing the way out of the straight to Otairi, Atholspear, White Fang, Royal Game and High Falutin’. Into ’the back Arrow Lad was the leader, and he soon had a break on Paratoo, Atholspear, High Faintin’, Otairi and White Fang, and this he maintained across the top, where ho was two lengths clear of Paratoo, Otairi, White Fang, High Faintin’ and Atholspear. The favourite increased his lead on the turn for home, with High Faintin’ making up ground, and it was left to the last-named to chase Arrow Lad home, being three lengths back at the finish. Paratoo was a length and a-half behind High Faintin’ with Atholspear fourth and Mountain Heath, Otairi and White Fang next to finish. Favourite’s Fourth on End. Another big field of youngsters figured in the Juvenile Handicap, and the well-backed trio Esteem (£277), Hampden (£247) and Chief Cook (£19;) —filled the places. The start was again a straggling one, and Chief Cook, Hampden, Esteem, All Humbug and Koval Songster were early prominent. On' the turn for the run to the judge Chief Cook. Hampden, All Humbug, Esteem, Royal Songster and Psychologist were in the van. A hundred vards from home Gray drove Esteem through and just caught the leaders on the post to win by half a head, with Chief Cook a head in front of Hampden. taking second money. All Humbug was a couple of lengths back, followed by Psychologist, Teller and White Squall. Hunting Cry Scores Comfortably. Hunting Cry and Royal Parade had a duel for favouritism in the open sprint, the Railway Handicap, and finally the topweight carried £547, as compared with £398 on Roval Parade. The lastnamed and Hunting Cry were first to move, while Keddar was also there when when the tapes went up. After thev had gone two furlongs Taranto was out clear from Royal Parade and Hunting Cry, followed by Dobbin, and when thev came round the turn Taranto was' two lengths ahead of Hunting Cry and Dobbin, the next being Roval Parade and Briar Root. At the distance Hunting Cry asserted himsclt and came on to win by a length and ahalf from Roval Parade, who halt a nock in front 'of Keddar. Dobbin was fourth, and Brond Acre and Taranto followed. Acmil Finishes Fast. Pakitere (£365) was better favourite for the Kiritaki Hack Handicap than Mahora (£247) and San Quex (£218), with Acmil (£165) sixth in request, carrying £lO more than Statuary. After a false start they got away fairly well, Mahora carrying the tapes witn him as he proceeded-to put a break on the field, being followed by Money Mint, San Quex, Pakitere and Pass On. Across the top Mahora still held command from Pakitere, Money Mint, San Quex and Pass On, and thus they turned for the run to the judge. Pakitere took the lead at the distance and Statuary forged ahead, only to be beaten in the last few strides by the fast-finishing Acmil, who got the verdict by half a neck, with Statuary a length* and a-half ahead of Pass On. Mahora was fourth and King Hal, San Quex and Pakitere next in order. Pewa Wins Handily. The Stewards’ Hack Handicap provided an even betting race, with Tripping (£298), Lordlike (£275), and Pewa (£248) carrying most money, while Nea Lap carried only £l4. Arrowzone and Tripping were in the van as they raced out of the straight, with Dainty Ways, Kariana, Pewa, Air Laddie, Arrowhead and Fallow following in that order. Into the back stretch Arrowzone, Tripping, Fallow, Pewa, Dainty Ways, Arrowhead, Spearopa and Nea Lap was the order, while across the top Arrowzone, Tripping and Kiriana were in line, being follower! by Nea Lap, Pewa, Dainty Ways and Arrowhead into the straight. -At the distance Arrowzonc and Tripping retired and Pewa came on to win by a length and a-half. The fast-finishing Nea Lap got second money, a head 4 n front of Tripping, while Jayson was right up with them. There was a gap hack to Spearopa, Arrowhead, Dainty Ways and Air Laddie. Kahikatoa Again. | Kahikatoa (£456) was most in request for the concluding event, th? Gorge Handicap, and Desert Song (£325) and Head Scrang (£300) were also well backed, with Tahoma (£127) at a good price. Kahikatoa, Tahoma and Hoad Serang were early in the lead, followed by Queen’s Choice and Desert Song, but the favourite was steadied and at the half-mile Tahoma and Queen’s Choice were showing the way to Kahikatoa, Head Scrang, Rory Mor and Desert Song. Thus they raced across the top. and when they entered the straight Queen’s Choice and Tahoma were together, ahead of Kahikatoa, Desert Song and Head Serang. Once Gray shook the favourite up ho camo away to win nicely by a length and a-half, while Tahoma hung on to beat Desert Song by a head for second place. Bold Front, finishing fast, was fourth, and Rory Mor and Queen’s Choice next.
