AWAITING CHRISTMAS

CITY MAKES PREPARATIONS THE SPIRIT OF SANTA CLAUS Wanganui is assuming Christmas garb. The jovial features of the man in the long red cloak, with his reindeers ten, is looking forth from, the shop windows. To older people his appearance is a reminder that although Christinas comes but once a year, the space in between each once is of remarkably short duration. To the younger Santa Claus stands lor all that is supreme in happiness. Eyes have pee’red up the chimneys many days ere this and the coming of the man with gifts is heralded by su*eh youthful enthusiasm that people of ripe age become young again in thoughts and deeds.

Within the schools there is the bustle which examinations demand. There is the close concentration on a survey of the year’s work and teachers and pupils seek to justify their labours. Thoughts of the glorious holiday ahead act as a fillip to industry and mind and body labour with the knowledge that there is rest awaiting.

In the shops decorations proclaim the festive season. New goods are being opened up with feverish haste and the wise business man is advertising his wares. The city can cater for all classes and when the coloured lighting adds the finishing touch to the scheme of decoration Wanganui will be well ready to celebrate another Yuletide season with all the enthusiasm it demandsz
