THE ART OF PLEASING

The modern girl certainly is justified in believing herself to be different from her grandmothers, when one reads of the counsels given to women by a French perfumer named Antoine, in his book, prepared in the year 3830, entitled “The Art of Pleasing.” Here are some of the remarks in tTie book:—

A woman who respects herself will avoid crowds. She will walk neither too fast nor too slow.

In her glance there will not be too much vivacity or too much languor. When she is seated her legs will not be crossed, and she will give the impression that she is neither too little nor too greatly at case. At table she will hold her peace, ex- 1 pect when the service languishes. This ideal woman will never sneeze, nor yawn, nor blow her nose in the presence of men, but in extremity w r ill go to another room, where sne can be neither seen nor heard. A wise woman, therefore, will take care not to break “the prism of illusion” lest her empire be destroyed. She will never allow a smile to break into a laugh. She will dance with all modesty, avoiding large steps. Finally, Ajitoine advises the fragile creatures of the day upon the delicate question of marriage. Listen to this: When a woman perceives that a man is making advances, she should delicately turn the conversation, if the man does not please her. If the contrary is the case, she should allow the man to become aware by degrees that his declarations are not unwelcome. Then she will reign—a complete mystery.
