ALLEGED FALSITY
INCOME TAX RETURNS DE P A RTM ENT’S CL Al M S LONDON, Dec. 2. The Inland Revenue Commissioners have charged Theophile Jean Baptiste Desnos, chemical manufacturer, Richmond, Surrey, with falsely understating by £18,862 his super tax returns for six years from 1921 to 1927; also with submitting false returns, claiming relief for three years from 1914 to 1917. These included the rendering of alleged false accounts of the Tasmanian Eucalyptus Oil Company from 1910 to 1925. The total omissions were £lOO.OOO and the defendant was liable to £40,000 taxation, of which £35.200 wore paid. Desnos said that he had won £85,000 by gambling at Monte Carlo in 1914-15. The oil company had branches in London and Melbourne.
It was alleged that Desnos held the majority of shares. It was disclosed that the profits of the London business concealed the Australian, namely £16.000, which, therefore, were never paid in British income tax. The case was adjourned.
