The Wanganui Chronicle WEDNESDAY, DEC. 3, 1930. PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS.

’T’WO suggestions, not very spectacular but very practical, have been advanced recently in connection with -the unemployment problem. The first was advanced by Jlr G. E. Moore has suggested that the Government subsidise subdivision fencing. The suggestion has much to commend it. Firstly it is very useful work that will repay the community by increased primary production: secondly it will provide work of a nature that can be .undertaken by the unemployed; thirdly, it can be paid for on a basis of the work done; fourthly, the benefit to the primary industries would be immediate. The more a farm is subdivided the greater its carrying capacity and the chance of noxious weeds and second growth getting away is correspondingly reduced. Finally, it would enlist in the employment of those now without work those farmers who have capital to take advantage of Government assistance in regard to fencing. The second suggestion was offered by Air K. Hatrick at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, who suggested that those of the unemployed who are unable to engage in the heavy work of road construction could be better employed in spraying ragwort and other noxious weeds. The co-operation of the Agricultural Department and the Unemployment Board should not be difficult to attain and with farmers undertaking to give a charge over the land benefited by the treatment of noxious weeds to cover the cost of spraying, or at least part of it, then not only would more land be brought into use but also public money would be returned to the Treasury when the benefit conferred made itself felt.
