ORDER OF THE SONS OF TEMPERANCE

At the monthly meeting of the Sunbeam Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance, held in the Alethodist Schoolroom on Tuesday evening, a very interesting account of the Order was given by Air F. W. Ansley, a past member, who has spent over two years in the Old Country. Ou Air F. W. Ansley’s arrival there, at the Grand Lodge of Birmingham, he was appointed to open a branch at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and that was accomplished on October 4, 1928, by the opening of the Melrose cadets, the instituting officers being the Grand Scribe Bro. J. Logan and Grand Patron Bro. James Jenking, both of Birmingham, Bro. F. W. Ansley being appointed Worthy Patron. Since the formation, over 70 members had joined. In England, Ireland and Wales, there are upwards of 100,000 adult members, and a like number of cadets. An annual cadet competitive examination is held, and last year attracted 1444 entrants, and 1999 competitors were successful in securing prizes and certificates. Great assistan. ■ given by Bro. Ou Juno 1 the Birmingm.'.u District Grand Division held their annual picnic, which was attended by over thirteen hundred, and was a splendid success, the Grand Lodge voting £25 towards defraying expenses, but so great was the response that they had in hand £l5 after paying expenses. The 75th annual session of the National Division was held at Sheffield at Whitsuntide, the civic reception on Whitsuntide morning, the following distinguished officers and friends and visitors going on the platform: Bros. Huntley, W. G. Wightman, Sir Win. Hart, .Bro, W. Gleadhill, Sister Airs Baedor, Bro. W. A. Noble, Lady Hart, the Bishop of Sheffield, Lady Alayoress, the Lord Alayor, AI.W. Patriarch, AI.W. Scribe, AI.W. Associate, M.W. Treasurer, and Bro. E. Hallswortb, P.M.W.P. On Whit. Alonday morning the Alost W< r.':y Patriarch called the session to o;X,. The number of credentials issm ’ >as as under, LI executive officers, 255 grand divisions representatives, and 181 subordinate division representatives, 450 representatives in all, 442 of whom were present. There were 85 representatives who were attending for the first time. A message of loyal greeting was ordered to be sent to His Majesty the King, members singing the National Anthem. Greetings wore received from Bro. I. AlcLeod, AI.W. Patriarch National Division of North America, and from Bro. H. R. Francis, Most Worthy Scribe of Victoria and South Australia.

The speaker was heartily welcomed to the meeting, and thanked for his address.
