SHIPS RACE TO THE RESCUE MAURETANIA’S VICTORY [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.] Received Nov. 20, 6.29 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 19. The Mauretania, beating i. number of other vessels, including the America, commanded by Captain Fried, of the Antinoe and Florida rescues, picked up 29 members of the crew, including the wife of the captain, of the sinking Swedish Ovidia, which they abandoned in a storm in mid-At-lantic.
The America was ten hours off its course in answering the Ovidia’s S.O.S. but the greater speed of the Mauretania brought her to the scene first.
